Omnivores Dilemma and In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan
Omnivores Dilemma:It took a journalist, Michael Pollan to give one of the best overviews of the state of modern nutrition we've ever read. Through sound research and the lens of a visionary he explores our relationship to food and to the earth- our true food supplier. What makes this book so valuable is that he has drawn on so many important perspectives and bodies of knowledge and research.
In Defense of Food:He then breaks it down into one simple nutrition message and a few guiding principles: Eat Food, Mostly Plants, Not too much. The path we take to arrive here may differ- but over time it can become this simple.
The Three Season Diet by Dr. John Douillard- LifeSpa
Although the title of this book and some of it's promotional approach are framed as a "new diet" and focused on weight loss.......as you may have guessed we wouldn't recommend another gimmicky diet book with false promises ! Dr. Doullard's work is informed by Ayurveda, which is the traditional Indian philosophy of health and life. This book and his website are a wonderful resource for eating within season and in response to the needs of our bodies within each season.
The Slow Food Movement
The Slow food movement started in one of the best places to experience food completely, Italy ! Here's how they describe their movement:
Slow Food is an idea, a way of living and a way of eating. It is a global, grassroots movement with thousands of members around the world that links the pleasure of food with a commitment to community and the environment.
